Step One

First Steps

You have been named as an executor. Here's what to do in the immediate days following a death.

In the first days after someone passes away, there are practical matters that need attention. You do not need to have all the answers. Start with the basics, and we will guide you from there.

In the first few days

Being an executor is a significant responsibility, but you don't need to do everything immediately. In the first few days, focus on:

  • 1 Find the will: Check with the deceased's lawyer, or look in their home safe, filing cabinet, or bank.
  • 2 Arrange the funeral: Check the will for any specific wishes. The estate will cover reasonable costs.
  • 3 Secure the property: Make sure the home is locked and valuables are safe.
  • 4 Notify key people: Employer, bank, insurance companies, about the death.

Getting help

Most executors instruct a lawyer to help with estate administration. This is the norm, not the exception. We can handle as much or as little as you would like.

"Don't try to do this alone if you are not sure. Estate administration has legal requirements, and mistakes can be costly. Getting professional help is almost always worthwhile."

Bring the original will to your first meeting with us. We'll explain the process, give you an estimate of costs and timeframes, and answer your questions.
