After Your Will

Your will is signed. Now what? Storage, updates, and preparing your executor for the future.

4 min read

Once your will is signed, a few practical matters remain. Then you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes from having your wishes clearly documented.

Storing your will

A will that can't be found is almost as bad as no will at all. Your original, signed will needs to be stored safely and your executor needs to know where it is.

Storage options:

With your lawyer

We offer secure storage and your executor can easily retrieve it

Home safe

Fireproof safe at home with executor knowing the location

Bank safe deposit

Secure but can be harder to access quickly

Public Trust

Registered for a small fee

Important

Never store your will in a place only you can access. If you are the only one who knows the combination or has the key, your executor won't be able to find it when they need it.

When to update your will

Your will isn't a "set and forget" document. Life changes, and your will should change with it. Review your will when:

  • Marriage or divorce: KEY POINT: Marriage revokes existing wills. Divorce may also affect beneficiary clauses.
  • New children or grandchildren: Include new family members
  • Death of a beneficiary or executor: Update your nominations
  • Significant asset changes: Selling property, inheritance, business changes
  • Relationship changes: New partner, estrangement from family

"Even without major life changes, we recommend reviewing your will every 5 years to ensure it still reflects your wishes."

Preparing your executor

Your executor will have a big job to do. You can make it easier by telling them:

  • 1 Where your will is stored
  • 2 Who your lawyer is (we can help them with probate)
  • 3 Where to find your important documents
  • 4 Your general wishes for funeral arrangements
  • 5 Any digital assets or accounts that need managing

What we do at this stage

At this stage, we store your will securely and explain when you should come back for a review.
